Done Deal? US and Iran Declare the War Over
On June 14, the United States and Iran announced a peace deal ending nearly four months of war, with both sides declaring the immediate and permanent termination of hostilities on all fronts including Lebanon. Trump authorised the toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US naval blockade. The 14-point memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey will be formally signed in Geneva on June 19. Iran reaffirms its NPT commitment on nuclear weapons; its missile programme and support for armed groups are notably absent from the text. Israel called the deal a deep disappointment.
