Iran nuclear deal, 12 May deadline [suggested reading]

Iran nuclear deal on the ropes. With a timely assist from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s exposé about Iran’s old nuclear files, US President Donald Trump looks set to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal. Although he likes to keep people guessing, every indication is that when the next deadline for waiving nuclear-related sanctions on Iran comes up on 12 May, he will refrain from doing so.

John Bolton, Donald Trump’s new national-security adviser, has long advocated regime change in Iran, and more recently has argued that the administration should openly embrace it as a foreign-policy goal…With proponents of regime change ascendant, the temptation in the Trump administration to cast the deal aside in an effort to weaken Iran is great.
#Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed what he says are “secret nuclear files” proving Iran once covertly pursued nuclear weapons.
The Israeli parliament has voted in favour of granting Israel’s prime minister the power to declare war, solely with the approval of the defence minister.
Netanyahu’s Bizarre PowerPoint Presentation on Iran. The fact that Iran was at one point pursuing nuclear weapons will likely be a surprise to no one—and indeed was a rationale for concluding the nuclear agreement in the first place. Many of the slides Netanyahu showed pertained to the period from 1999 to 2003, during which the U.S. also cited evidence of an Iranian nuclear-weapons program, and after which a U.S. National Intelligence Estimate said the program had been shut down.
